CENTER HARBOR — The Center Harbor Historical Society has received a grant from New Hampshire Humanities to present "New Hampshire's One Room Schools: The Romance and the Reality." The program will be presented on Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m., at the Schoolhouse Museum, 94 Dane Road, Route 25B. Center Harbor.

Hundreds of one-room schools dotted the landscape of New Hampshire a century ago and were the backbone of primary education for generations of children. Revered in the literature and lore, they actually were beset with problems, some of which are little changed today. The greatest issue was financing the local school and the vast differences between taxing districts in the ability to support education. Other concerns include teacher preparation and quality, curriculum, discipline, student achievement, and community involvement in the education process.

This program is free and open to the public, with refreshments served after the program.
