LACONIA — Scouts Troop 68 in Laconia recently participated in the 60th annual Scoutmaster's Council Camporee at the West Point Military Academy. Run entirely by West Point cadets, the event is one of the largest scout camporees in the country, attracting thousands of scouts from across the country.
The event featured a variety of competitions and demonstrations. In addition to watching demonstrations such as parachuting and weapons, Troop 68 scouts challenged themselves in several events led by cadets, including air rifle, grenade throwing, wilderness survival, camouflage, combative skills and early morning physical training. Most scouts reported that a highlight of the event was the chance to talk one-on-one with cadets, learning first-hand about life at the academy.
A tour of the West Point campus, including historic Fort Putnam and the West Point Museum allowed scouts to learn to gain further insight into the academy, cadet life and the pivotal role of the academy in the history of our country.
