LACONIA — The New Hampshire Veterans Association in partnership with the Laconia Historical and Museum Society will host their annual tour of the buildings and grounds at Lakeside Avenue, Weirs Beach on Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. This tour is free and open to the public.
Historian Fred Merrill will take you on a guided tour of this eight-acre complex and tell of many interesting stories of this meeting place that served as reprieve and a place for the men to gather and reunite with their fellow soldiers that they created bonds with during the Civil War.
In June 1875, the New Hampshire Veterans' Association was organized in Concord. The first general reunion and encampment occurred in October of that year at the Riding Park in Manchester. In 1878, The NHVA held its second reunion and encampment — its first at "Weirs Landing" (Weirs Beach). The Encampment Headquarters building located on Lakeside Avenue was built in 1885.
The walking tour will begin promptly at 1 p.m. at the Encampment Headquarters (across from Mount Washington Cruises) in The Weirs. Provide your own masks and hand sanitizer if needed, social distancing is recommended.
