MOULTONBOROUGH — Scouting America Troop 142 is planning a trip to Philmont on July 4, 2026. Philmont is an extreme scout ranch in the mountainous terrain of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico. It exists to give scouts the opportunity to navigate and hike a rugged mountainous area for seven days. This adventure will be unique, as due to the 250th birthday of America, Philmont will have special activities on the trail for scouts to earn a special patch.

Troop 142 consists of scouts from Ossipee, Tamworth, Moultonborough, Meredith, and Sandwich. They have ambitious goals of summiting both Tooth of Time and Baldy mountains during their time at the ranch. To prepare, scouts have been hiking intensively. Since June, they’ve hiked over 25 mountains, and close to 50 miles. They plan on completing lists including the 52 mountain tops with a view, the 48 4,000 footers, and the 25 terrifying hikes of New Hampshire before the trip to train. During time on the trails, they have experienced many learning opportunities. One scout brought a can of beefaroni for lunch, only to find no one brought a can opener. On another hike, some scouts got lost, and had to bushwhack and communicate while on the trail. Without this necessary experience, the scouts may have never learned the true importance of always being prepared, having the correct food, and good trail communication and navigation. There will always be more to learn though, and they hope to continue growing their knowledge and experience during their training. From emergency first aid to bringing proper gear, the scouts will be using every opportunity possible to live up to the motto "Be prepared."

To support the scouts on their trip, send donations to Moultonborough Troop 142, P.O. 365, Melvin Village, NH 03850. For more information, keep up with Troop 142 on Facebook at facebook.com/100082317887139, or contact Herschel Chambers at 706-255-4966 or beeza44@yahoo.com.
