CONCORD — The New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources recently shared that the State Historical Resources Council added eight properties to the NH State Register of Historic Places. Two are local to the Lakes Region.

Camp Kuwiyan operated as a summer camp for girls on Lake Winnipesaukee from 1927 to 1956, and was one of five active summer camps in Meredith in the mid-1930s. Several of its historic buildings, dating from 1905 through 1930, remain on site, notably the lodge, dining platform, theater and workshop; the lodge and dining platform retain many important architectural features, including exposed dimensional lumber building frames, novelty drop siding and quasi-Adirondack-style exterior details.

Built in 1819, the United Methodist Church, in Alexandria, was one of three active churches in town, but the only one active by the close of the 19th century, a distinction that remains. During the 1930s and 1940s, its church bell served as the town’s fire alarm. In addition to holding regular worship services, the church continues to offer community suppers and rummage sales to fund activities.

To nominate a property to the NH State Register of Historic Places, members of the public should research the history of the nominated property and document it on an individual inventory form from the NH Division of Historical Resources. Having a property listed in the Register does not impose restrictions on property owners. For more information, visit nhdhr.dncr.nh.gov.
