WOLFEBORO — The Wright Museum will host Ed Gordon on Tuesday, July 16, at 7 p.m., to discuss the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal. This is the sixth program of the Wright Museum’s 2024 Education Series.

During World War II political and military leaders of the Empire of Japan committed major war crimes and crimes against humanity. Over 6 million civilians and prisoners of war were killed by the Japanese. Three percent of Allied soldiers died in German and Italian prison of war camps; 27.1% of captured Allies died in Japanese prisons or while used as slave laborers.

This record of brutality led to the convening of the International Military Tribunal of the Far East or the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal in May 1946. Representatives of 11 Allied nations participated in this trial which lasted until November 1948. Twenty-eight men were tried — 19 military officers and nine political leaders, four of whom former prime ministers including General Hideki Tojo who held that post during most of World War II.
