LACONIA — On Aug. 1, the American Legion Post 58 of Belmont, completed a repair project for Belknap House. The home plans to reopen this month, and needed siding repairs, a window installation, electrical work, and plumbing and hardware repairs in the kitchen area. The Legion worked closely with Colleen Garrity, president of Belknap House, and Don House, vice president and board member, to develop the project plan, obtain discounted materials from Middleton Building Supply Co. and Boulia-Gorrell Lumber Co., and obtain a loan of a 56’ lift from Mike Collins of Ready Equipment. Taylor Rental of Belmont also delivered staging as a donation to the work site. Larry Trombetta, a general contractor, contributed his expertise, material purchase and providing a metal bending tool.
Over 250 man hours of time was contributed by the Post membership through the four-day project. It was supervised by the Post Vice Commander Russell Fabian, a professional contractor, who also contributed tools and equipment. Other members who contributed were Fred Fabian, electrician; Bob Kay, plumbing; Mo Gouin, carpentry; Mike O’Meara, Tom Garfield, Richard Nowak, Lee Cheshire, Woody Fogg, Anne Cheshire and Elma Howe.
The Belknap House expressed their appreciation for the project. House wrote, “Belknap House was blessed to have a volunteer group do such an outstanding job on the renovations at Belknap House. I've worked with many volunteers, but your team was the first to provide a project plan, help us reduce the expenses, and provide such high caliber skilled volunteers. Your team accomplished many items we've had on our wish list for a while. Thanks again for all your contributions and hard work of your members. The exterior looks so much better now.”
