MEREDITH — Altrusa is an international non-profit organization founded in 1917. The Meredith Club has been active since 1980 with a focus on literacy, volunteerism and community service. Altrusa Welcome to Kindergarten bags have been donated for over 20 years by the literacy committee.

This project started small, recognizing that kindergarten is a major rite of passage. This year, the committee delivered a total of 110 Welcome Bags in time for kindergarten registration. Currently, the project includes the kindergarten students enrolled at Inter-Lakes Elementary (55), Sandwich Central (10), Moultonborough Central (30), and New Hampton Community School (15). The typical and very colorful drawstring bag seen in this photo includes items such as crayons, pencils, dice (great for learning numbers), a deck of cards (for flash-card use), a coloring activity book, Wikki Stix, modeling clay and a brand new book providing a reading opportunity for parents with their new kindergartner to address first-day jitters and many of the new milestones to come! This project is only one of many Altrusa initiatives and community outreach efforts.
