Weirs United Methodist Church marks significant milestone

WEIRS BEACH — The Weirs United Methodist Church is marking a significant milestone this year: 100 years in its current building, dedicated in 1926 after the Great Weirs Fire destroyed the original structure two years earlier.

Methodism has shaped the Weirs since the 1870s, when summer camp meetings drew families from across New England. A year round church was built in 1886 and served residents and visitors until the devastating 1924 fire swept through the area. In the years that followed, the congregation committed itself to rebuilding, and the 1926 church has remained a familiar landmark overlooking the boardwalk for a century.

Throughout its history, the church has played a steady role in community life. Boy Scout troops met in its fellowship hall, Alcoholics Anonymous held ongoing meetings there, and during Laconia Motorcycle Week the church became a welcoming stop for the Christian Motorcyclists Association. In storms, hardships, and quiet moments of need, the church has often opened its doors without fanfare.

Today the congregation remains small but deeply committed to its mission of hospitality and service. Sunday worship continues in the same sanctuary built a century ago. The church’s pastor, Mark Lamprey, who has served for 13 years, calls the centennial “a celebration of resilience, faithfulness and the simple grace of being here for one another.”

As part of the anniversary, the church is collecting stories, photographs, and memories from anyone connected to the Weirs — through worship, community groups, Motorcycle Week, or family history. Residents and visitors are invited to share their recollections or stop in for a visit.

For 100 years, the Weirs United Methodist Church has stood as a reminder that community is built through steady presence and open doors. It continues to offer that welcome to all who pass through Weirs Beach.
