LACONIA — Local artist Larry Frates visited the Laconia High School Comics and Characters class to kick off their new unit on caricatures. He spoke about the difference between cartoons and caricatures and explained how he got started creating these drawings as a way to pay the rent in college, and how good communication with the subject helps him add detail and depth to his drawings.

Students at Laconia High School have many avenues for developing their artistic skills, including Comics and Characters, which weaves together both drawing and storytelling. Instructor Jill Trimble reported that "students were fully engaged in Larry's demonstration as he secretly chose a student to draw while we all guessed who it was until it was complete. We will use all the knowledge and skills he shared to do our own caricatures in class this week."
