Mike Conant: The direction Laconia has taken needs to be addressed

During the past few months, I have dedicated my time to understanding the varying concerns regarding the direction Laconia has taken in the recent past. These discussions with my Ward 6 neighbors and citizens across Laconia have been very enlightening with a vast majority expressing frustrations with the current situation.

The homelessness issue is a driving factor in these conversations. The current city council have been “addressing” this problem for years with task forces and committees, and yet there has not been a meaningful impact. Laconia citizens I have spoken with are very compassionate but, without accountability, their patience has worn thin. Existing laws and ordinances must be enforced. Programs already established need to be fully utilized to help with our mental health and dependency issues amongst our unhoused population.

The current infrastructure of Laconia continues to be a major concern for the city residents. There has not been a plan put forth by the city council with clarity on how this problem will be resolved. Kicking the can down the road for another two years is not an option when the largest development project in Laconia is progressing and numerous changes to infrastructure will be needed.

Thoughtful discussions of issues and concerns with respect even in disagreement is a value I hold dear. I am not a politician but a proud citizen of Laconia that only wants the best for our city. If elected I will lead with transparency and not political rhetoric.
