To The Daily Sun,
In 1973, over 50 years ago, I was in high school. I remember distinctly watching my "sisters" fight for their rights to make choices for their own bodies. I was aware of the heated arguments and the courts going back-and-forth. And when it was finally decided by the Supreme Court that women had the right to make their own choice, I was so pleased because while I understood the deeply rooted belief in pro-life, I was pro-choice.
The reasons that the majority of opinions were pro-choice were the same back then as they are now. The No. 1 reason was and is still is that there would still be abortions, regardless, and so the widely held belief was to make abortions safe and healthy, both physically and emotionally.
We understood then what we still know today, that women would still choose abortion for many various personal reasons. What we understand also is that both men and women do not take this decision lightly. What ever the reason that they are not wanting to bring an unwanted child into the world, and there are many reasons, one of them still today is that men can walk away. Yes, I’m saying it. Still, after 50 years, men can and are still walking away.
If we make abortions illegal again then abortions will still be done, we will just be going back to the very unsafe, archaic way of over 50 years ago. Please, let’s not go back. Please pay attention to candidates like John Sellers (R) who think abortion is should be illegal after 15 days when women don’t even know they’re pregnant yet. Please vote for Richard Lobban (D) of District 10, and other forward thinking men, women and Democrats. Pleas let’s not go back.
