To The Daily Sun,
Pittsfield former student, parent, taxpayer, coach, and athletic director Jay Darrah said it best, “Our school is more than a building. It is where our community comes together.” (Concord Monitor, Feb. 7, page A8)
The basic reason why we must have truly adequately supported public schools is to sustain self-governing communities where we see and accommodate each other’s values and needs. The current movement to drain resources from public school to advantage private schools and schools outside the community feeds an undemocratic spiral of political division.
There are many reasons why most students cannot participate in unaccountable Education Freedom Accounts and Open Enrollment and will remain in local schools.
Instead of maneuvering to advantage a select few students, we need to commit to strengthen our local schools for ourselves and our neighbors and create carefully vetted alternatives for those of us who need them.
