David Matteson: If voters were better informed, many politicians wouldn’t be elected

Politicians lie. They will promise anything to get your vote. They promise what they can’t or won’t deliver. Remember George H.W. Bush’s “no new taxes," Barack Obama’s “you can keep your health care” and Donald Trump’s “Mexico will pay for the wall." Politicians, political parties and super PACs are the least reliable sources of information. Next comes news channels like MSNBC and Fox News. If you are far right you love Fox News and if you are far left you love MSNBC. Again both are biased, however, in my opinion one is much more biased than the other. Next comes the news on ABC, CBS and NBC. I think that they mostly report the news correctly but are probably biased on what they chose to report and not report. The last source of information is the internet and it is as biased as anything but if you care to search in most cases you can separate political truth from lies. Do the facts and statistics actually back up a politician’s claims?

Unfortunately I think that most voters listen to the politician that says what they want to hear, watch the news channel that echoes their beliefs and only read internet articles that reinforce what they believe. Most voters do not want to hear hard truths and think which is part of the reason why our political system is the disaster that it is today. If voters were better informed many politicians wouldn’t get elected or re-elected.
