To The Daily Sun,

The Trump administration is increasing climate change denial and it is important that scientific facts are understood. The last time we had carbon dioxide at this level in the atmosphere was about 14 million years ago. At that time, the Antarctic and Greenland were ice free and the sea level was 75 to 120 feet higher. Since the late 1700s carbon dioxide has increased from 280 to 420 parts per million and temperatures have risen 2.2 degrees since the late 1800s. It takes a long time for the massive ice sheets to melt, but it is happening. The sea level has risen 8 inches since 1880 and the rate of rise is increasing over the last 30 years. Over 97% of climate scientists are in agreement that humans are causing warming temperatures and climate change. As carbon dioxide increases, temperatures will continue to rise. Virtually all the major petroleum companies have issued statements that are in agreement. We know what we have to do to reduce carbon emissions with improved technology and carbon pricing policies. Importantly, the transition to a green economy will lead to economic prosperity with better paying jobs, protection of natural resources and significantly reduced health care costs. We are the stewards of this planet for our children and future generations. We must act accordingly.
