To The Daily Sun,

Jackie Hanley was correct in her assessment of divisive politics entering the Laconia elections. Democrats, independents, and real-world Republicans will remember just how destructive Gilford resident Norm Silber was a few short years ago. For those who did not live in the area, Norm Silber and his followers attempted to shut down Gunstock Ski Area. The outrage when he did this also caused the formation of the “non-partisan” group Citizens for Belknap who actively called him out for his destructive behavior which included actions that resulted in over $50,000 in lawyer fees for a secret report.

Fast forward to July 10, and Mr. Cheney’s announcement of his candidacy on the deck of a closed restaurant. Of the approximately 10 people that attended Norm Silber stood out in the crowd with the other four Gilford residents in attendance.

How would Mr. Silber know about the event at a closed restaurant in another town?

Was he personally invited by Mr. Cheney or was his attendance requested by fellow city councilor and campaign manager Bob Soucy?

Who thought that optics would benefit both of their candidates?

The most destructive elected official within the recent history supporting both of the “good ole boy” candidates. Did Cheney and Soucy feel that the inclusion of now temporary Mayor Charlie St. Clair would assure those viewing and reading about this would quell the concern?

Moving to election day, the claims of Mr. Cheney that he would not know Silber proved false. Gilford resident Silber actively held signs supporting Cheney’s quest for mayor standing proudly alongside City Councilor Soucy. Then, to everyone’s surprise, Mr. Cheney arrived with warm handshakes exchanged, pictures taken and I am sure campaign strategy discussed between the three.

Actions speak volumes when words are hollow. Be careful, Laconia voters.
