In response to a recent letter regarding the condition of the Gilmanton Pine Grove Cemetery, please know that Pine Grove is owned and managed by a private association. The town and town Cemetery Trustees have no authority over the site. It can be emotionally overwhelming to find gravesites unkempt but please contact the officers of the association to learn the reason.
Since the site has been maintained for many, many years it would seem there must be some unusual reason for its current condition. In the past, two-such privately owned cemeteries in Gilmanton found themselves unable to continue maintenance because it became too much for the few active association members to tackle. Usually, all owners of graves are members of the association, but as the initial owners pass, descendants may not understand the duties or burdens of the association.
It was wonderful of you to care for your family graves.
