To the editor,

As the end of July is approaching and school shopping is starting, I find myself thinking about the first day of school and remembering Step Up Day at Laconia Middle School. All the incoming 6th graders were excited at the first sight of their very first dance at LMS. Their moms and dads had that worried look on all of their faces. I was just like one of those moms, three years ago. I remember the feeling I had; my daughter was ready to be at LMS but I felt like I was going to be sick. As I watched my 8th grade daughter give tours to the incoming new moms and dads, a feeling of complete happiness and calm came over me.

We were so fortunate to have been a part of LMS. I remember the rumors, “Oh you don’t want your daughter going there.” “Are you sure you really want her going there?” The panic I felt was overwhelming. Many parents asked me questions that night, and the same panic swam in their eyes. Rest assured, rumors are just that, rumors. I could not be more proud that my daughter went to LMS. The administration, staff, and even the custodians are top notch! They are there for our children. I have seen teachers stay after school until a child understands a math problem, or just to stay and talk about a situation that happened at school, or even at home. The programs for before and after school are wonderful, so take advantage of them. They are there to help our children and to keep them in a safe, caring environment. It is a wonderful experience to see them start as shy 6th graders and transform into confident, responsible 8th graders.

I do encourage that if you as parents want to be involved, go to the PTO meetings. These are typically held the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Mr. McCollum is usually at every one of these meetings. It’s a time to go over what’s new at LMS, as you are getting first hand information. It’s a time to ask questions, and a time to learn about upcoming events. The staff is always available at anytime to have meetings if you have questions or concerns. Utilize Edline if you can, for it is a great tool! You are able to check your child’s grades, and communicate with their teachers if needed. The LMS website will have things posted of up and coming events, and it is important to check this out!

As a parent, I will sadly miss Laconia Middle School. As last year’s LMS PTO co-chair, what an experience it was to see how much the teachers and staff go above and beyond for our children. I don’t think people really know how involved they get, beyond what they teach from books. They become our children’s friends and mentors. Trust what you have taught your child, and trust that LMS is a great place for your child to be.
