To the editor,
Back in 1991 I referred to myself in campaign literature as a Common Sense Conservative. One who is frugal with the taxpayers’ money, will ask questions of those requesting those dollars and would vote to expend them on items and services that show a real need, as well as making those responsible for the spending accountable.
And today that description still fits; however, it has become necessary to also encourage those who agree with conservatism to be principled conservatives. This has not been easy.
Prior to the primary four years ago my support, for what it is worth, was given to George W. Bush to win the Presidency.
During the Clinton Presidency many Republicans, Republican activists, and principled conservatives readily taunted and ridiculed those Democrats who, knowing the liar Bill Clinton was, would defend his actions, some unlawful.
To refresh your memory, do the names James Carville, Lanny Davis, Paul Begala, Bob Schrum, and Bob Bechel come to mind? Didn’t they make us sick?
Now Republicans are asking principled conservative Republicans to go to the polls and give Pres. Bush a big vote 1/27.
Considering, now that the Party has rediscovered most of us, that it will be cold, they expect me to go and give a vote to the one who will prevail, after seeing the back of his hand way too often in these past three years?
If this President was a Democrat, we conservatives would be all over him; but no, a majority will continue to be lemmings.
Pres. Bush has my support in the war on terrorism, but am I supposed to just forget that he allowed an attack on the First Amendment (Campaign Finance which he could have vetoed), No Child Left Behind (the joke that it is), the Bush Medicare Plan, the trip to Mars, the lack of fighting for good Judicial nominees, and the final nail (so far), allowing illegal aliens to cross our borders to take jobs away from Americans, promising to give them social security checks when they return to Mexico. Read: our Social Security dollars and possibly allowing people who wish to do us harm to come into the USA undetected!
How can a principled conservative give Pres. Bush a vote in the primary? As for this principled conservative Republican; I expect to in November when challenged by the Democrat, but not on January 27.
