To the editor,
This is a reply to Raymond Burton's' letter to the editor that appeared in the July 28 Daily Sun. Mr. Burton was quoting Governor Lynch stating that "The New Hampshire Highway Fund cannot continue to be used like an ATM machine." The Governor's answer to this is to increase the state gas tax. Governor, the taxpayers cannot continue to be used like an ATM machine either.
Mr. Burton, this taxpayers answer to the increase of any tax is NO. Government at all levels should live within its means. Set priorities and cut waste and inefficiencies. God knows we certainly have plenty of those in government. It would be extremely interesting to compare current spending to five years ago, calculate the percentage of increase, and then compare that to the percentage of change of the wage earners income. Taxpayers are losing ground. But cuts to actual expenses never seem to happen. Once an expense item gets into the budget does it ever get eliminated? And once a tax gets implemented or increase, be it gas tax or other wise, does it ever get cut? I think we all know the answers to that. The schmuck tax payers get hit again and again and again.
