WEST STEWARTSTOWN — A Berlin man, who was an inmate at the Coos County House of Corrections, was found unresponsive in a cell early Monday morning, Oct. 3, and was pronounced dead after life saving measures were unsuccessful.
Joseph Courchesne, 36, was being held without bail by Berlin District Court for alleged violation of a protective order.
He was found unresponsive in a cell at approximately 12:40 a.m. and correctional officers immediately began emergency medical treatment which continued until 45th Parallel EMS arrived according to a press release issued by Corrections Superintendent Ben Champagne. The release said emergency lifesaving measures continued until 1:11 a.m., at which time Courchesne was declared dead.
The Coos County Sheriff's Office, the county attorney's office and corrections officials are investigating, and at this time, they do not suspect any foul play. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the official cause of Mr. Courchesne's death.
