A driver and a passenger were injured when two cars collided on Gilford Avenue (Rte. 11A) near the First United Methodist Church shortly before 3 p.m. yesterday.

According to police, who did not disclose the identity of those involved in the accident, a 2000 Toyota Avalon was traveling eastbound in the breakdown lane when it was being passed by a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer in the travel lane. At that moment the driver of the Toyota made a U-turn into the path of the Blazer and the vehicles collided in the travel lane. The Toyota remained on the highway while the Blazer came to rest on the shoulder on the north side of the road.

Gilford Fire Rescue took the driver and passenger in the Toyota to Lakes Region General Hospital where they were treated for what police called "non-incapacitating injuries." The driver and passenger in the Blazer escaped unhurt.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
