Although the Planning Board last night approved a proposal to subdivide Timber Island into three lots, virtually all of its 135 acres and 1600 feet of shoreline will remain unmanaged forest under the stewardship of the Lakes Region Conservation Trust.

The island was given to the trust by Richard Champlin of Rochester before his death in 1991 on the condition that three camps would be exempt from all encumbrances. The board approved the proposal to subdivide the property into four lots of 2.18 acres, 5 acres, 2.28 acres and 125.55 acres, with the three camps representing less than 10 acres.

The island is closed to the general public. The three stewards of the lakes region Conservation Trust are entitled to walk the property once each year. And the owners of the three camps may walk the island at their leisure.
