The heavy rains that fell last weekend flooded the basement of St. James Episcopal Church on North Main Street, closing the nursery school for at least a week. "The sump pumps failed," Explained Senior Warden Lorna McEwen.

McEwen said the floodwaters were discovered last Sunday morning, when the nine o'clock Bible study class gathered after the eight o'clock service. "The carpeting throughout the basement was ruined," she said, "and soft things like pillows and some books were lost, but most of the furniture was not affected."

McEwen said that the pumps were restarted Sunday and by Monday the remaining water could be "squeegeed." She said that the clean up has continued throughout the week, but that the nursery school would not reopen until the carpet was replaced, which she hoped would be early this week.
