LACONIA — North Main Street will be closed to thru traffic between the railroad tracks near New Salem Street and Oak Street starting Thursday, May 30, through around noon on Friday, May 31, for repairs to manholes and catch basins in the road.
“The manholes and many of the street's catch basins between the railroad tracks and Oak Street are in line with the wheels of cars and trucks. The impacts from the trucks and other traffic have damaged the mortar in the bricks and they have settled enough that it is impacting traffic and causing water to pond,” Public Works Director Wes Anderson said Wednesday. “The situation will just get worse.”
The mortar structures need time to cure before traffic can traverse that section of the road.
“Public Works, to give a change for the mortar to cure, is closing North Main Street between the railroad tracks and Oak Street for 24 hours,” Anderson said. During the first day a contractor will raise all the structures and use a mortar with an accelerator in it to cure the mortar overnight. The next day the contractor will pave around the structures and the road will be reopened.
Residents who live on that road are able to access their properties through the use of Lyford, Parker and Harvard streets.
Emergency vehicles will have access during the road work.
