A man was run over while trying to corral a runaway car at the Petro Mart at 280 Court Street shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday.

According to police, a man parked his car, but left the engine idling while he went into the store. The car began rolling down a slope toward the fuel pumps. A bystander who saw the car start to roll attempted to stop it, but failed. He then tried to jump into the driver's seat and apply the brakes, but lost his footing and fell under the rear wheel.

The man was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital by the Laconia Fire Department with potentially severe, but not life-threatening, injuries. The accident remains under investigation by the police.
