Marines, family and friends of the Lakes Region Detachment, Marine Corps League celebrated the U.S. Marine Corps' 249th birthday at Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith Saturday night. The party started with a cocktail hour, where the traditional birthday celebration ceremony was held. Attendees could then eat dinner together afterward. One tradition is for the oldest marine, in this case, Bob Pelland, 88, to cut the cake with a mameluke sword, which can be recognized by its cross hilt and ivory grip design. The sword is a reminder that marines are a band of warriors, committed to carrying the sword to bring peace to the country. The first slice of cake goes to the oldest marine, but the second slice goes to the youngest, which was John Gallant, 60, on Saturday. This tradition symbolizes the passing of experience and knowledge, and emphasizes caring for younger marines before looking to their own needs. In some traditions, the guest of honor may receive the first slice of cake. Guest speaker Master Gunnery Sgt. Constance Heinz gave remarks about her experience as a woman in the marines, gender integration and human rights for the Afghan national army while serving in Afghanistan.
