BRISTOL — Thirty-year-old Nicholas R. Clifford of Bristol is facing drug charges in what started out as a noontime medical emergency call at Dollar General yesterday.

Police Chief James McIntire said Bristol EMS found Clifford to be conscious but lethargic when they examined him, but he refused medical treatment.

Bristol police officers who also responded to the call took him into protective custody until they could reach someone to take him into their care. While confirming his identity, police discovered he had about $2,000 in counterfeit $100 bills, as well as a crystal substance they believed was crystal methamphetamine.

They obtained a search warrant for his vehicle and there found heroin and crystal meth, along with $504 in cash and other items police say indicated drug sales.

Police have charged him with one count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and one count of heroin possession.

The counterfeit cash possession case will be forwarded to the United States Secret Service for investigation, McIntire said.
