ALTON — The 2018 property tax rate in Alton, as set by the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration, is $13.99 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, an increase of $1.13, or 8.79 percent, from the 2017 rate of $12.86.

It is 16 cents, or 1.13 percent, less than the 2016 rate of $14.15. The town’s net assessed valuation increased from $1,575,850,936 in 2016 to $1,711,107,085 in 2017, which lowered the tax rate that year, and the valuation increased slightly, to $1,720,675,186, in 2018.

That means that a hypothetical $200,000 home that paid $2,830 in taxes in 2016 might be valued at $218,380 today, and would have a tax bill of $3,055.14. This illustration does not take into account the new construction that contributes to the town’s net assessed valuation, and individual properties values would vary, based on the type of structure, location, and other factors.

The municipal portion of the tax rate increased by 22 cents, or 5.9 percent, from 2017, and is 5 cents, or 1.28 percent, higher than in 2016.

The county tax rate increased 17 cents, or 14.53 percent, from 2017, and is 9 cents, or 7.2 percent, higher than in 2016.

The state education tax rate increased by 1 cent, or 0.48 percent, from 2017, but is 25 cents (10.68 percent) lower than in 2016.

The local education tax rate increased by 73 cents, or 12.41 percent, from 2017, but is 5 cents (0.75 percent) less than in 2016.
