Murder in a Small Town is back in full swing, returning fans to Gibsons for some more fascinating whodunnit cases for the good police chief Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) to solve as he navigates his own growing relationship with Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk).
The cozy mystery drama is now in its second season, and as Karl’s jurisdiction expands, Cassandra faces new challenges as the newly elected town council member, particularly when it comes to the mayor, Christy Holman (Marcia Gay Harden).
So what’s next for the Fox procedural? And when will the next episode air?
Well, on Tuesday, October 28, the show will not run a new episode in its usual timeslot, as the series has been preempted by the airing of the 2025 World Series Championship.
The show will instead return for Season 2 Episode 6, “Trust, But Verify,” on Tuesday, November 2, at 8/7c on Fox.
The description for the episode tells us, “Karl and the team investigate a reported bear attack, leading to questions about foul play due to inconsistent stories; Karl’s daughter and friend continue to work on solving their own case.”
The preview video for the episode (embedded above) indicates that this will be an intense investigation indeed.
It will mark the sixth episode of the season. The premiere episode, “Acts of Murder,” featured a victim who’d been attacked by multiple people, including his own wife, but was engaged in some seriously shady deals. The second episode, “Blood Wedding,” featured Emmy winner Camryn Manheim in a guest role as a family grappled with the murder of the bride’s father. The third, “Mother Love,” featured Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s last screen performance as a single father whose ex-wife came back to town against his wishes and then ended up murdered. The fourth, “One Last Song,” featured a pop star who died after being thrown from a cliff at the rental house belonging to Phyllis (Fiona Vroom). And the fifth, “Strangers Among Us,” featured Tyler Posey and Jaden Rain in guest roles as persons of interest in a case where a man was found nearly shot to death on the side of the road.
Two other guest stars who are expected to appear in this season are Jamie Chung as Lanni Soo, a prosecutor who’s “career-driven and straight-forward” and brings a case to Karl, and Sara Canning as Mackenzie Rankin, who organizes a memorial after the death of her sister.
Plus, creator Ian Weir previously teased another case to come involving a double kidnapping. “Of all the stories in the season, that one’s the one that sort of goes at 100 miles an hour right out of the gate and just doesn’t let up. It looks like it’s a double abduction, but Karl begins to realize very early that the abduction wasn’t the point of this. There’s something else going on. What is it that’s going on? And with two kids in deadly peril. How does he find out in time what it is that’s actually happening?” he explained.
In other words, when the show does return from this temporary baseball-induced break, it’ll be back at full speed indeed.
