Euphoria‘s Season 3 finale may also be the show’s final episode, but creator Sam Levinson made sure to feature late star Angus Cloud one last time as Fezco returned in Rue’s (Zendaya) final dream sequence before her own demise. Warning: Spoilers for the Euphoria Season 3 finale ahead!
But did Fezco actually escape from prison in the end, and how did Cloud make a posthumous appearance? The latter is explained by a report from Esquire, wherein Levinson revealed that the footage fans see of Fez and Rue standing side by side is an old test reel that hadn’t been shown before.
“It’s footage that never made it into the show,” Levinson explained. “I thought, Oh, it’d be great to use that footage and just see him again—and see the two of them.”
As viewers will recall, Cloud died in 2023 at the age of 25 of a fentanyl overdose, an element that played a major role in Euphoria Season 3 as Rue ultimately succumbed to an overdose, unaware that the pills had been laced with the deadly substance.

But this old footage was a way to honor the actor who never got a chance to reprise Fez for the final season.
At the beginning of the season, it was revealed that Fez was in prison, and his intentions to escape using parkour were something that Levinson revealed was influenced by a particular case. “It was in Pennsylvania, where the guy climbed out of the prison and ran into the woods. It’s sort of loosely inspired by that,” he told the outlet.
The face of the man climbing out of prison isn’t clear on the security footage viewers are shown onscreen, but it’s a wishful sentiment to believe that Fez managed to break free of the confines he found himself in. Ultimately, it would seem that Fezco’s grand escape, which ushered Rue to his side, was merely in her head, with his true fate in the real world being unclear onscreen.
