BELMONT — Susan Coritta Houle, 82, of Province Road, passed away peacefully at The Birches at Concord on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.

Susan was born on July 18, 1941, in Lebanon, the daughter of Alphonse and Esther Demers, nee Elder.

She enjoyed helping others, as that was her generous, caring nature. Susan was a home healthcare aide for Lakes Region Community Health for many years. Her love of the elderly is what made this job so special to her. Susan also loved horses and was able to enjoy them in her early years of life and again when she retired.

She and her late husband, Richard, built a barn at their home, then she attended farrier school in Oklahoma to shoe her own horses and help her friends. Richard joined her at farrier school, and together they owned and operated Stonebridge Farriers and Belmont Glass for many years. They traveled extensively in their RV all over the United States. Susan also took a trip of a lifetime with her high school friend, Barb Garneau, to Ireland to ride horseback. Susan was a talented quilter, seamstress, and knitter, learning these skills from her mom. She enjoyed making quilts for her family.

Susan is survived by her son Alan Ashey (Rachelle); daughter, Leslie Newman (Joe); grandchildren Julia (Matthew) Bartolotti, Emily (Elijah) Gravenhorst, Taylor (Jessika) Fletcher, Josh (Tara) Ashey and Mitch (Darcy) Ashey; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Susan also leaves behind her stepchildren Nancy, Donald (Denise), Wayne (Raina) and David (Karen) Houle, Linda Tavizon, Coleen Poire, Judy (Jim) Shevlin, many step grandchildren and great grandchildren. “Suzy-Q” also leaves behind her beloved childhood friend, “Peggy-Sue” McKinney of Lebanon. Susan is predeceased by her parents, her son Eric Ashey, and step son-in-law, Wes Tavizon.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at The Birches of Concord and the Granite VNA Hospice for their wonderful compassion and care given to our mom, “The Walker” and the “Escape Artist” in her last days.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The Conference Center at Blueberry Lane, 35 Blueberry Lane, Laconia.
