Philip T. Burrows, 91, of Meredith, passed away at home with his family by his side on Feb. 1, 2025.
Phil was born in Sandwich, on Dec. 31, 1933, to Frank and Eldora (Taylor) Burrows. He attended the Lower Corner School in Sandwich before moving to the Quimby School. After completing his education, he worked as a logger for his father until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1956. He completed his basic training at Fort Ord in California, before going to Germany, in 1957. Phil returned to the United States and served another two years in the U.S. Army National Guard Reserves.
Phil would return to his childhood home on Mount Israel in Sandwich in 1960, before moving to Meredith. He would begin building homes in Meredith on his weekends while working for Worthmore Lumber Company and Lumbertown. In the late 1970s he returned to logging with 3D Logging, where he continued until he returned to his own business of Burrows Construction and Plowing. He retired from the construction part of the business in 2010 at the young age of 76, but would continue plowing his 80+ customers until 2017, when he officially retired. After a very short time he decided retired life wasn’t for him and began doing odd jobs for another two years.
For over 50 years Phil could be found at George's Restaurant in Meredith or The Village Kitchen in Moultonborough having coffee and a "bite to eat” with a group of regulars. Sadly, those lifetime relationships ended with restaurants closing due to COVID. He enjoyed going for long drives to nowhere but eventually ending up somewhere, usually at family or friends’ homes to stop by and say hi. Phil was a loyal and dedicated family man who was always there when needed. He spent nearly a decade caring for his ailing father, mother and wife, and would be by their side until their departures.
Phil is survived by his daughters Sheila Burrows and Jim of Grantham, and Tamara Burrows-Havlock and Rodney of Meredith; grandchildren Tara Anderson, Amanda Rodriguez, Lee Anderson and Taylor Newberry; and nine great-grandchildren.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Eldora (Taylor) Burrows; his wife, Alice (Weeks) Burrows; a brother, Roger Burrows; and grandson Jordan Newberry.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Elm Hill Cemetery in Sandwich. Please consider planting a tree in his memory.
