Kenneth "Buffalo, Buff" Somers of Alexandria passed away in his home on Dec. 20, 2023, after a period of declining health.
Buff was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, on March 28, 1955. Buff was the oldest son of Robert and Josephine (Szufnarowska) Somers.
After graduating from high school in Framingham, Buff attended East Coast Aero Technical College and later transferred to the American Motorcycle Institute in Florida where he became a certified motorcycle mechanic. His love for motorcycles led him to owning and operating a motorcycle shop (D&S Cycles) in Concord, with his good friend, Kurt Dearborn. They owned the shop for many years and they both earned the respect of many motorcycle enthusiasts and clubs for their expert work.
After the sale of the motorcycle shop Buff started logging and that became his livelihood for most of his life. He harvested and sold firewood to many locals for years. Buff was a kind-hearted individual who knew many people from motorcycles enthusiasts to those who he sold firewood to on a regular basis. Many locals depended on his wood to heat their homes and that was a lucrative business for Buff until his health became an issue.
Buff was married to Barbara (McLaughlin) and they had recently celebrated 35 years of marriage in May of 2023. Buff loved to fish and hunt, ride motorcycles and 4-wheelers. He made a trout pond at his home, where he enjoyed feeding the trout. Buff enjoyed showing off his trout pond to visitors and would always have bread on hand for visitors to be able to share in the feeding and watching the trout come up to retrieve their treats.
As a youngster, Ken and his family had the great opportunity of vacationing and spending summers at Newfound Lake where both his parents and his grandfather had camps on the lake. Buff loved spending time at the lake and was a great fisherman. The family enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting the Newfound region and all the boys became full time residents of the area in their early 20s.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Barbara (McLaughlin); two daughters, Colleen of Alexandria and Shannon Somers of South Alexandria; two grandchildren, Kodi Somers and Shelby Ballou-Somers; and two brothers, Jeffrey of Hebron, and David of Hill; along with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Buff was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Josephine Somers.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, at Riverside Cemetery in Alexandria officiated by Rev. John Fischer. Friends and family are welcome to attend a celebration of life in Buff’s memory at the Coppertop Inn in Hebron, following the service.
