The war in the Middle East has called many to duty in service of their country, leaving behind family and loved ones who often struggle in their absence. The emotional and financial strains can be overwhelming, and to respond, many in our community have banded together to offer assistance. K & B's Italian Bistro in Meredith has joined in this effort.

On Thursday, April 24, the popular eatery will be hosting a benefit auction with all proceeds to be donated to the Freedom Fund New Hampshire. That fund, the brainchild of WEZS radio talk-show host Niel Young, WEZS owner, Gary Hammond, Belknap County Sheriff Dan Collis, and Laconia Police Lieutenant Mike Moyers, is dedicated exclusively to lending a helping hand to the families of our troops.

The fund is administered by the Laconia Police Relief Association, a registered non-profit organization with an impressive record of operating with no overhead expense, enabling it to direct 100 percent of the contributions it receives to those it's meant to benefit.

Businesses wishing to make a donation of items to be placed on the auction block are asked to drop them off at K & B's Italian Bistro, 67 Main Street, Meredith, or P.K. Zyla's General Store at Handy Landing, Weirs Boulevard, or if dropping off the item is too inconvenient, contact Barry or Karen Myers at 279-0985 and someone will be dispatched to pick up the item.

The auction preview will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with Auctioneer Extraordinaire P.K. Zyla wielding the gavel beginning at 7 p.m.
