Gilford High School students to address Thompson-Ames Historical Society

GILFORD — The Thompson-Ames Historical Society is pleased to welcome a presentation by Gilford High School Advanced Placement U.S. History students on Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. The students, along with teacher Mike Zulauf, will discuss the diverse periods of the 1950s and 1960s, which brought upheavals in social and political conditions, both locally and throughout the nation. The presentation will take place at the Union Meetinghouse, 24 BelknapMountain Road in Gilford. The public is invited to attend and support the work of some of Gilford's most promising students.

The presentation on Tuesday continues a two decades long partnership between Gilford High School's AP U.S. History class and the historical society. Throughout the partnership, the class has researched and presented information relative to aspects of local life and history in the Lakes Region focusing on Gilford, Gilmanton, Belmont and Laconia. Over a three year period, the classes were engaged in extensive research to piece together the life of Henry Whiteman, a Civil War veteran whose journals and personal papers were discovered in a local home several years ago. In the past few years, students presented information pertaining to local history during the periods of World Wars I and II, and the years of the Suffragette movement.
