MEREDITH — The staff of Meredith Public Library invites the public to attend an unveiling and dedication of a mural on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m.
Every student in grades 7 through 12 at Inter-Lakes Middle High School visited the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s “Americans and the Holocaust” traveling exhibition in September 2025 at the Meredith Public Library. While there, as participants in the international Butterfly Project, each student painted a butterfly in remembrance of one of the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust. Those butterflies will now be part of a permanent mural and installation at the library.
The ceremony will begin with a presentation by Lynne Rainen who will share personal experiences of growing up in the United States as a Jewish woman. There will be a reading of “The Butterfly,” the poem by Holocaust victim Pavel Friedmann which inspired The Butterfly Project on which the mural is based. Mural artists Karen Jonash, Marilee Sundius, and Janet Sanguedolce will be in attendance and will speak about creating the mural.
The public will then be invited to see the mural and painted butterflies for the first time. The mural is located on the ramp to the teen zone on the first floor of the library (to the left of the elevator).
Finally, a reception will be held in the function room. Traditional Hebrew treats such as rugelach — provided by Rainen — will be available along with cookies and other refreshments.
