MEREDITH — Lakerbots 8046 Robotics has received a $5,000 donation from the Crane Charitable Funds to support its mission of inspiring and engaging local students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
This gift was made possible through the recommendation of Crane NXT associate Jane Leydon, who recognized the impact of the Lakerbots’ work in providing hands-on learning opportunities for students.
The Lakerbots, based at Inter-Lakes Middle High School, provide students in grades seven through 12 with the chance to explore robotics, engineering, and programming in a competitive and supportive environment. The team is proudly led by Head Mentor Joe Derrick, alongside a dedicated group of adult mentors who help build and support the team throughout the year. The Lakerbots are also a publicly recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ensuring that all contributions directly support student learning and program growth.
As part of the global FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), the Lakerbots design, build, and program a full-scale robot each season to compete against teams from across the world. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international organization that uses robotics as a platform to inspire young people to become leaders in science and technology while fostering essential life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.
“The support from Crane Charitable Funds directly fuels our ability to provide students with meaningful STEM experiences,” said Bill Kaik, mentor for Lakerbots 8046. “These funds will help our team purchase parts, equipment, and resources needed to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition, while also expanding opportunities for local youth to explore robotics and engineering.”
The Crane Charitable Funds have a long legacy of philanthropy, supporting causes such as education, food security, and community development. Their investment in Lakerbots 8046 highlights a shared commitment to empowering the next generation of innovators.
“We are incredibly grateful to Crane Charitable Funds for believing in our mission and in our students,” Kaik added. “This donation will have a direct impact on their ability to explore STEM, build confidence, and chase big dreams.”
