TILTON — It’s not every day that high school students can be found operating an excavator, skid steer, or 70 foot bucket truck instead of studying in a classroom, but some Winnisquam Regional High School students did just that.
The change of pace sprung from an initiative launched by the Belknap Landscape Family of Companies of Gilford to provide local students with diverse experiences. Belknap Landscape and its subsidiary Belknap Tree and Plant provided equipment and industry professionals to the school for a morning of education and trying new things. The event was a big success.
Hayden McLaughlin, the owner of Belknap Landscape, has long supported these programs and is happy to be offering something new. “It’s really important to offer students as many opportunities as we can, even if it’s just for a day” said McLaughlin. “Some kids will walk away from an event like this excited about exploring a trade, whereas others will have just had a fun morning. Regardless, they got the chance to try something new, and that’s a big part of growing and learning.”
Belknap Landscape anticipates continuing this program and others like it across the Lakes Region. So far this spring, they’ve held events in Tilton and Alton, with an event scheduled in Wolfeboro.
