Spring is right around the corner, and Merrymeeting Lake, although frozen solid, is glistening once again. This beautiful 1,233 acres of crystal-clear, deep, spring-fed waters will soon begin to wake up for the season.
Merrymeeting Lake continues to be one of the Lakes Region’s most desirable lakes. Known for its crystal clear, deep, spring-fed waters, here are a few highlights and sales statistics:
- The maximum depth is 120 feet; average depth is 29 feet; surface area is 1,233 acres; and elevation is 647 feet
- The length is 3.1 miles; width is 1.3 miles; and shoreline length is 11 miles
- The lake’s outlet is the Merrymeeting River, flowing south then northwest to Lake Winnipesaukee; the river is approximately 10 miles long
- There is a dam at the west end of the lake, which is used to control the lake’s water level
- The lake features a town beach and boat launch area
- Merrymeeting Lake is considered one of the clearest and cleanest lakes in the state, with its deep spring-fed water offering year-round recreational enjoyment
- A small marina, cottage rental community and seasonal country store are the only commercial developments on the lake
- The Powder Mill Fish Hatchery, located just below the lake’s outlet (at the base of the dam), is fed by the overflow of the lake’s water. It helps maintain the quality and quantity of fish in Merrymeeting Lake and other bodies of water throughout New Hampshire. The outlet for the lake is also a popular spot for fly fishing
- The lake’s common loons’ nest on the western shore
- Great local hikes from the lakeside include Mount Calvary, Devil’s Den, Mount Bet, and Mount Molly
- Nearby skiing at Abenake or Gunstock Mountain Resort
- The Merrymeeting Lake Association exists to help preserve the Merrymeeting Lake watershed and water quality, to stimulate participation in New Durham and the lake community, as well as updates on events and water quality
By coupling conservation-first surroundings with a true sense of community, the lake has created a sanctuary that is as ecologically sound as it is recreationally vibrant. Whether it’s a morning boat launch, a visit to the seasonal marina, or a walk for an ice cream, the lifestyle at the lake remains unmatched.
Landmark victory for conservation
As you look across the water at the ridges that frame the lake, we all have more reason than ever to celebrate with thanks to the tireless collaboration between the Merrymeeting Lake Association, the Southeast Land Trust of NH, Moose Mountains Regional Greenways, and key state programs, the lake’s ridgelines are secure.
- Mount Jesse (The Robert Deslauriers Memorial Forest): As of December 2025, 606 acres on Mount Jesse are now permanently protected. This ensures the “viewshed” everyone loves remains unbroken forest forever
- Birch Ridge Community Forest: This massive 2,000+ acre forest (protected in 2019) continues to serve as a vital filter for the lake’s water quality and a playground for local recreation
- Town commitment: New Durham’s Conservation Overlay District continues to prioritize high-priority ecological resources, ensuring the “Deep Water” status is protected for generations to come.
