To The Daily Sun,

Honor America by displaying the American flag. What did one flag say to the other? Nothing, it just waved. Actually, our American flag does have something to say. We recently celebrated Veterans Day, many attended ceremonies, heard the national anthem and held flags. Do we think of what we’re watching, singing and holding? The history of displaying an American flag on the first flagpole in the U.S. goes back to 1776. Our flag represents our country’s past, present and future all in one place. By flying a flag at one's residence, it shows love for country. Military families fly flags, leave lights on in windows for soldiers overseas, and pray for their return. This past Veterans Day was meaningful to our family as we gathered with over 60 people attending a ceremony dedicating a new flagpole at Meredith Bay Village Community where our parents live. Recently, a group of veteran residents who meet monthly, decided to erect a flagpole in dedication to all who served and still serving. With meetings, fundraising and perseverance, these veterans worked together, just like in their military days, to reach their goal. On Nov. 11, a ceremony was held outside MBVCA, and the new flagpole displaying our American flag was raised reminding us all of the sacrifices made. Our family was moved when they asked our dad, a Korean War Navy veteran, to present the flag from his wheelchair. The flag was hoisted for the first time by two veteran residents. We thank this group that represents all that is still good in America today. When readers see this flag flying, remember it as a symbol that inspires and unites us as Americans. Think of those who sacrificed for our nation, those who still do today, and the next generation of brave ones to come.
