Richard R. Gerken: Harris needs to communicate with American people about her policies

Kamala Harris has been vice president for almost four years. She has participated in massive government spending that has helped heighten inflation to a 40-year high. As Joe Biden’s “Border Czar,” over 10 million undocumented and unvetted immigrants have illegally entered our country. She appears to be running a campaign of hope and joy, but is not communicating with the American people about her policies. By avoiding unscripted press conferences and media interviews, she appears to be trying to “run out the clock” to Election Day without revealing where she stands on important issues. Harris is on video saying:

She proposed legislation and supported “Medicare for all,” which would eliminate private health insurance. She favors extending free health coverage to “undocumented workers.”

She supports and favors open borders, amnesty for illegal immigrants, and is against completing the southern border wall. She has also proposed eliminating Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

She is anti-fossil fuels, against drilling on federal lands, and supports a ban on fracking which historically increased domestic oil production that led to American energy independence.

She has proposed substantially increasing individual income, capital gains and corporate tax rates but is unclear on expiring 2017 tax cuts which increased the standard deduction, child tax credits and the federal estate tax exemptions. She has also proposed a tax on unrealized capital gains, which is unprecedented.

She supports eliminating the Senate filibuster, which requires 60 votes to enact significant legislation and protects minority rights.

She supported and encouraged the rioters of summer 2020 and sponsored a bail fund for those arrested in Minneapolis.

Spokespeople for Harris have stated she has changed her opinion on some of these positions like fracking and the border, but lack of accessibility for explanations handicaps becoming an informed voter, which is a prerequisite before casting a potential vote for her.
