Leonard Witt: Thieves stealing, goons vandalizing more Harris/Walz signs

Every day at the Democratic offices in Conway, Moultonborough, Sandwich and Wolfeboro voters come into the office to pick up a second or third Kamala Harris/Tim Walz sign after thieves stole or goons defaced the ones they picked up earlier.

The most visible case of theft happened on a recent Friday in Moultonborough. A group of Democratic volunteers received a shipment of 8-by-4-feet Harris/Walz signs for high traffic roads. One volunteer drove to Manchester to pick up the signs, others in Tamworth built the frame and still others drove to locations to set up the signs on owner approved personal property. It was several hours of work per sign because the volunteers believe in our democracy and in the give and take of free speech.

Unfortunately, thieves, and in this case vandalizing goons, think they are entitled to steal or deface signs and undo the work of all those people and the more than 200 years of work in building a democracy, built on trust between neighbors.

People who steal signs are crooks, plain and simple, and they must be treated that way.

They are not just stealing a sign, they are stealing everyone’s right to free speech.

Nothing said here is going to change their weirdly wired minds; maybe a couple of arrests will help — that’s being worked on — but what will really help is for each of us to cast a vote for Harris/Walz and all Democrats up and down the ticket. Doing so will be a vote for democracy, free speech, private property and the American way of life, all of which the crooks and goons are trying to destroy.
