Jessica Fleck: Support Mark Lewandoski for Belmont Selectboard

As a three-year member and the elected vice chair of the Belmont Budget Committee, I would like to clarify the primary role of a Budget Committee under RSA 32. Our purpose is to assist voters in the prudent appropriation of public funds by reviewing, preparing, and recommending the proposed budget.

The committee reviews — not controls — expenditures. We meet with department heads, examine financial needs, and ensure that the budget proposed by the selectboard supports essential services while responsibly managing the impact on taxpayers. The Budget Committee also has the authority and responsibility to carefully scrutinize and refine the proposed budget.

This year, the committee performed its due diligence, resulting in unanimous support of the proposed budget after only one adjustment and just two “no” votes during the entire review process.

This is our third consecutive year facing the possibility of operating under a default budget. Another default budget would almost certainly require cuts to essential services that all age groups rely on every day. By passing this balanced proposed budget, we can maintain the quality of life, infrastructure, and services that keep Belmont strong.

The proposed $12.1 million operating budget supports the hardworking and dedicated employees who keep our community running safely and smoothly each day.

It is also important that we elect strong leadership to guide our town forward. That is why I am proud to support Mark Lewandoski for Belmont Selectboard. Mark brings integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to transparency. I am confident he will always put the best interests of Belmont first.

I encourage all registered voters to participate on March 10 and make their voices heard. Voter participation ensures that our town continues to move forward together.
