To The Daily Sun,
On January 11, I received another note from my mail carrier that I had not removed enough of the city-donated iceberg wall in front of my house. Apparently they can't swoop in and get the mail into the box easily. Well, I'm all for making their job easier. It's what I live for.
Here's what really bothers me: In my neighborhood, some houses have mailboxes inside porches and others like mine are on the street. So at 70 years old, I have to move snowbanks to satisfy my federal employee while others get their mail in a box attached to their house. That delivery requires an engine shut off, exit the truck, a walk up the driveway, a walk down the driveway, entrance to the truck, engine start up and off you go. That's great for the people with house-mounted boxes but I have to move a wall of ice. That's all I have time for now because I have to find my pick and shovel and get started. It just doesn't make sense. Once again, thanks for nothing.
One more thing, when I moved in five years ago, we went four or five days with no mail. As the carriers would drive by while we were out front, they would wave and smile. On the fifth day I received a note in my box on the house stating they would not deliver to the house mounted boxes of new construction or new owners of existing houses. We received no mail for five days as they drove by waving, just a notice five days later in my box. There is something very wrong with this route. I learned recently that this rule of requiring new owners to move the house mounted boxes to the street has been rescinded.
Now I'd like to move my curbside mailbox back to the side of the house like it was when I first bought this place. I see mail being delivered up driveways of much younger people than me. I really hope I don't detect any age discrimination here. We all know how the federal government feels about discrimination.
By the way, I was a 40 year active member of the Teamsters and the IUE-AFL CIO.

That offer is from me - Alan Vervaeke.
Sir - send me your address and I'll be glad to come help you with that snow. Before we lived in NH we had that same issue in MA when we lived on a corner and neighbors helped us keep the sidewalks clear.
