To The Daily Sun,

Donald Trump has made vicious lies about migrants a key component of his campaign. Early on, he declared: "The greatest invasion in history is taking place right here in our country. They're coming from everywhere. They're coming at levels that we have never seen before. ... They're coming from prisons. They are coming from jails. They are coming from mental institutions and insane asylums."

In the recent presidential debate he declared to a national audience: "In Springfield, Ohio, they [Haitian immigrants] are eating the cats. They are eating the pets of the people who live there..."

The Republican governor of Ohio quickly declared Trump's accusation to be "garbage" and the mayor and city administrator announced that nothing of the sort had occurred.

Shortly after Trump's wild "pet eating" claim, his running mate, J.D. Vance, was interviewed about Trump's assertion. Vance's answer was clear and unambiguous: "The American media totally ignored this stuff until Donald Trump and I started talking about cat memes. If I have to create stories so that the American media pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do because you guys are completely letting Kamala Harris coast." In other words, "We don't think you are hitting the Harris-Walz team hard enough, so we are going to lie to make our case."

The Trump campaign is now largely based on lies about immigrants, lies which are clearly designed to foster fear and hate which he hopes will get him elected. The clearest parallel to Trump's strategy is the Nazi propaganda demonizing Jews and Gypsies in the 1930s. Is this what we want for leadership in our country? Is this what America is about? Let's hope not.
