Doug Lambert: Local law enforcers are doing important work we elected, hired them to do

I could not let a recent letter published here in The Daily Sun attacking Belknap County Sheriff Bill Wright go without comment. To suggest that law enforcement officers working to uphold the laws of our land is somehow "a slap in the face to the U.S. Constitution, due process and Belknap County residents" is an affront to normal sensibilities. Claiming that the enforcement of our nation's immigration laws to protect the wellbeing of citizens is nothing more than pandering to a certain constituency group disliked by the letter writer is pretty standard stuff for many people that share her ultra-liberal mindset and can be generally shrugged off. What cannot be ignored, however, is the author's claim that our local officers have a "penchant for racial profiling and white nationalism." And that by doing the job we have elected and hired them to do turns them "into nothing more than Nazi Stormtroopers," labeling their important work as "fascism." These inflammatory words and accusations could not be further from the truth. Sheriff Bill Wright is one of the finest people we could have protecting our rights and we are fortunate for his service. I would add this sentiment to many other men and women of our local enforcement agencies as well. I thank them all for their hard work and dedication to serving the public- especially Sheriff Wright, who has taken a very well-articulated and appropriate lead role in this all-important matter that keeps all of us safer as we go about our daily lives.
