To The Daily Sun,

The author of the letter "Numbers demonstrate NH's contribution to climate change is statistically insignificant" makes faulty assumptions and misses the essential issues regarding climate change. CO2 production is not equally distributed. The U.S. as a whole is responsible historically for the largest amount of CO2. New Hampshire, per capita, contributes about 10 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year. Other areas contribute less. For example, the United Kingdom contributes 4.6 tons and India 1.74 tons. Furthermore, if we all take the approach that our individual contribution doesn't matter, improvement will never occur. We all have to pull together.

The big picture, though, is that transitioning to green energy is good economic policy. Renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuel. Green jobs are high paying good jobs that expand the middle class. There are other economic implications. New Hampshire international exports were $7.6 billion in goods in 2023. Many countries are adding regulations to reduce carbon emissions generated by imported goods. The European Union, has instituted the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism that applies a fee to carbon emitted during the manufacture of carbon intensive imported products. Other countries have or are considering similar fees. We need to stay competitive to keep our economy thriving. It is the job of government to keep us safe and prosperous. Green policies do both.
