Dale Dormody: Hoping Democrats understand the mandate given to them

Back before the Republican Party lost its mind, back when the late Lindsey Graham actually believed in Republican values, and before his about-face to becoming a Donald Trump lackey, he made this prescient statement: “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed … and we will deserve it.” It took a few years, but boy did he get it right. The once-proud Republican Party is a pitiful, hollow shell of hate, discrimination, greed, corruption and division. All of this is courtesy of the MAGA crowd. Great job, people.

The next few months will see Republicans distancing themselves from Trump as quickly as possible. We've all heard the phrase "like rats fleeing a sinking ship." A good thing to remember, however, is that someone jumping ship to save their behind doesn't wash away someone's prior complicity, motives or character. A rat on a new ship is still just a rat.

As to Democrats, I sincerely hope they understand the mandate given to them. They need to immediately begin repairing the economic and reputational damage Trump and MAGA have wrought, while at the same time doing everything possible to bring justice and accountability to all of those who have so flagrantly broken the law and violated the Constitution over the past two years. If they ignore or fail at those tasks, they too should be swept away in 2028.
