Bruce Jenket: Many smart people ignore facts that contradict their political narrative

I have argued with conservative friends for years that people who vote for Democrats are not stupid. I have family and friends who vote for Democrats, and they are just as smart and personable as my conservative family and friends.

Recently a conservative friend made this comment: “Smart people with an ethical base, when confronted with new fact or a change in the situation, will adapt and overcome it. It’s a requirement for success.” That was an epiphany for me.

I have debated two hard-left Democrats. One for years who read the Durham report and will not admit that the FBI used the unverified Steele dossier to obtain FISA warrants to prolong the Russia collusion hoax. The other won’t accept that Hunter Biden’s laptop is real.

It’s not just those truths they ignore but also, President Joe Biden’s involvement in the Biden family business. The evidence is overwhelming, but it doesn’t matter. These individuals are well educated, intelligent and financially secure. The one common attribute they share is the ability to ignore facts that contradict their political narrative. As I have said in previous letters, “Faith overrides reason and logic.”

If either would admit Russia collusion was a hoax and Hunter’s laptop is real and say they don’t care, that would at least be honest. But they refuse. What has happened to truth, honor and integrity? Those ethics are the foundation of a healthy society.

They are just two voters. What about the millions of others that “believe” the lies put out by MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.? When lies are portrayed as truth and truth portrayed as lies nations fail. Fools embrace and repeat the lies. Smart people with “ethics” seek the truth and proclaim it. It’s a requirement for success.
